Order and Cleanliness

4. Introduction to the 5S Methodology

4.2. Sorting

IS THE SPACE IN YOUR ORGANISATION OR COMPANY EXPLOITED TO THE MAXIMUM, IN AN EFFICIENT AND RATIONAL WAY?

DOES EVERYONE HAVE THE NECESSARY MATERIAL, DOCUMENTS AND TOOLS TO CARRY OUT THEIR JOB?

Sorting is identifying, classifying, separating and eliminating from the workstation all unnecessary materials, conserving all the essential materials that are used.

4.3. Setting in Order

CAN YOU FIND ANY TOOL OR DOCUMENT IN LESS THAN 30 SECONDS WITHOUT THE NEED TO MOVE FROM YOUR WORKSTATION OR ASK SOMEONE ELSE?

Setting in order is establishing the way in which necessary materials must be placed and labelled so that “anyone” can find, use and replace them rapidly and easily .

Appropriate PLACING leads to “A PLACE FOR EVERY THING AND EVERY THING IN ITS PLACE”.

LABELLING established a common language: “A NAME FOR EVERY THING AND EVERY THING WITH ONLY ONE NAME”.

4.4. Shining

HAVE THERE BEEN BREAKDOWNS IN MACHINERY IN YOUR COMPANY DUE TO THE LACK OF CLEANLINESS?

DO YOU FIND YOURSELF IN THE OBLIGATION TO SPEND A WORKING DAY CLEANING INSTEAD OF WORKING NORMALLY?

Cleaning consists in keeping the workstation clean, ensuring that everything is always in perfect condition for its use.

Cleaning implies identifying and eliminating sources of dirt, difficult places to clean, patch-ups and worn or damaged parts, for which suitable procedures are to be established and applied.

The idea is to assume a preventive approach: IT IS NOT SO MUCH A MATTER OF CLEANING, BUT OF AVOIDING GETTING THINGS DIRTY.
