4. Precautions and rules for the manual handling of loads

To lift the load:

  1. a) Stand as near as possible to the load, with your feet slightly apart and pointing towards the direction you are going to move.
  2. b) Bend down by bending your knees but keeping your back straight.
  3. c) Firmly grasp the load, using the palms of your hands and the bases of your fingers.
  4. d) Before making an effort, breath out, tuck your chin in and tense your abdominal muscles and buttocks.
  5. e) Lift the load making an effort with your thigh muscles, keeping your back straight.

To displace the load:

  1. a) Keep the load and your hands as close as possible to your body.
  2. b) Keep your body in a vertical position.
  3. c) Do not twist your spine; use your legs to change direction.

To lower the load:

  1. a) Stand as close as possible to the place where you are to deposit the load.
  2. b) Separate your legs after separating your feet, tuck your chin in, breathe out and tense your abdominal muscles and buttocks.
  3. c) Keep your back straight.
